Gene expression by RNA Polymerase II (RNAPII) is tightly controlled by Cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs) at discrete checkpoints during the transcription cycle. The RNAPII pausing checkpoint, engaged after transcription initiation, is controlled by CDK9 to regulate transcription in metazoans.
